Three hundred dollars and over three hours of butt pain. That was the literal and physical cost I paid when I got my very first custom nail art. You’re probably wondering why in the world anyone would spend the same amount of time and money that it takes to get a simple tattoo on a glorified paint job for their nails. You might even call that person a little crazy.
I’m Sunja Mitchell, and not too long ago, I was that crazy person. Don’t get me wrong - my nails looked beautiful. It put your run-of-the-mill manicure to shame, and everyone noticed. It felt great to display something so unique on my fingers and know that no one else’s nails looked quite like mine.
But there was a problem - my beautiful nail art began to fade away. Before I knew it, I was faced with a decision: either plant my ass back on that seat for another three hours and fork over another three hundred dollars, or go back to boring, plain jane single-color manicures.
Being a woman of modest means in my early 20’s, reality quickly set in and it became obvious that I couldn’t keep shelling out hundreds of dollars every few weeks just to hold on to my own little fashion trend. At the same time, I dreaded the thought of slapping on a solid color and returning to nail mediocrity. Clearly, something had to give.
Fortunately for me I have two beautiful teen-aged sisters, who kept badgering to try these press-on nails that they were wearing. At first, I dismissed them. They looked like these silly, cute artificial nails that were for young girls. To my surprise, these press-on nails, even though they were a plain solid color, felt and looked great.
After my new found press-on nail discovery, I set out to find more unique styles with higher end designs. That search came up empty, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and create the press-on nails that I wanted to wear. Fast forward a few months, and Marmalade was born.
